OUR MISSION
For over a millennium, the city of Wuhan has been a center of cymbal and gong making in China. From ceremonial music and opera to modern stages around the world, instruments from this region have been known for their depth, character, and individuality of sound.
Wuhan Cymbals and Gongs exists to preserve and advance this tradition. Our instruments begin as raw bronze and are shaped through a combination of fire, forming, and hammering techniques developed over generations of skilled craftspeople. Depending on the model and musical purpose, these processes may vary—each approach carefully chosen to achieve a specific voice, response, and feel.
By balancing time-honored methods with thoughtful refinement for modern performance, we create cymbals and gongs that are expressive, dynamic, and deeply musical. Subtle variations in shaping, thickness, and tension ensure that every instrument carries its own character while remaining true to its intended design.
While machines can provide consistency, character is shaped by human judgment. Many Wuhan instruments are brought to life through hand-guided hammering and voicing, where experienced craftspeople shape the metal by ear and feel. The result is an instrument rich in overtones, responsive to the player, and unmistakably human-continuing the living legacy of one of the world’s oldest percussion traditions.
